Many NGOs and organizations for social change have emerged in India in the last decade but very few have expanded on the basis of scale and impact on the community. After all, being able to set up an NGO in government is a difficult task to scour through red tape.

And given the lack of transparency in transactions in our country, even getting donations and sponsorships are not easy. Despite all these obstacles, there are some NGOs that have made a substantial social impact in India so far.

Established in 2002, Smile Foundation promotes the cause of education among underprivileged children. The people behind Smile Foundation envision children as the building blocks of the future and hence have developed a system ranging from healthcare, education, livelihood, women empowerment where underprivileged children can help their underprivileged counterparts.

Citing a more familiar example, the award-winning documentary "I Am Kalam" based on a cause for children was supported by the Smile Foundation.

Little Kali is a sponsorship project started by Anand Mahindra in 1996, with the aim of breaking the vicious cycle of poverty in India by educating the girl child. In partnership with 21 other NGOs that help the Little Kali project realize its objective, each sponsor provides necessary educational and material support to a selected girl child.

You too just Rs. 2400 or Rs. 3600 per annum and get regular reports about its progress. Did you know that the Nanhi Kali project aims to support the education of 100,000 girl children by the end of this year?

Most of you must have heard about the 'Joy of Giving Week' celebrations that get national coverage in the Indian media every year. This week of giving is hosted by GiveIndia Foundation which does not do grassroots community work but holds a unique position among Indian NGOs because. Why? Because it serves as an online and offline donation platform for over 200 Indian NGOs, which have been screened through giving India scanners for transparency and reliability in their operations.

If you donate through GiveIndia, they'll let you know where your money went and follow up with a feedback report. Founded by an alumnus of IIMA, this organization for social change has received many awards for its work in creating accountability in the field of charity.

Listed as India's Most Powerful Rural Entrepreneurs Organization by Forbes, Goonj has achieved many milestones in the past in adding value to the community.

With the famous "Vastra Samman" program, Goonj has mobilized reusable and recyclable items like clothes, books, food grains, export surplus, and much more from urban to rural centers.

With multiple donation points across the country, Goonj is successfully broadcasting over 70,000 kilograms of content every month, has a team of over 300 volunteers, and partners with 250 other organizations.

Established in 1978, HelpAge India is providing assistance to the abandoned, poor, and isolated elderly people of India. HelpAge India has been instrumental in influencing policy change for the elderly in governments and providing emotional and material support to abandoned veterans, among many other supporting actions to support India's gray population.

From opening physiotherapy centers to sponsoring cataract operations to provide helplines to help the elderly understand their rights and fight for them, HelpAge India has come a long way. Do you know that this NGO also represents its objective in the National Planning Commission of India?
